When the call came asking if I’d be interested in shooting a centerfold spread for the International Pole Dancing Magazine Pole2Pole, I jumped at the opportunity. Last week, I got to collaborate once again with my good friend, top-ranking pole dancer and Pole Pressure Studio owner, Jessalynn Medairy.

There’s an unspoken trust and mutual admiration that’s apparent each time we get together to shoot. The new main shooting space at Sly Horse Studio was the perfect location at which to shoot. The high ceilings and the ample array of in-house studio equipment easily handled the potential challenges of shooting a dancer on a 15-foot high pole.

Every so often a charity comes along that really means something to me. I feel blessed to be able to offer my photographic services, from time to time, to an organization that’s doing so much…especially for children. My friend Amanda Polk hosted a warm-up party at the Hotel Washington to raise awareness and funds for KEEN (Kids Enjoy Excercise Now) along with NBC Sports Anchor and Honorary Chairwoman, Lindsay Czarniak. The sold-out crowd included KEEN founders Elliott and Estee Portnoy, Holidae Hayes, Cindy Jones, Sharon Dougherty, Roby Penn, Aaron Jackson, stylist Lana Orloff, Pamela Sorensen, and designer Matt Landsberg. The raffle of prizes, which included a Michael Jordan-signed basketball, a two-night stay at the W, President’s Club tix to a Nats game, and gift certificates to Darlington House, raised over $2,000. The Warm-up party is the kick-off for KEEN’s biggest fundraiser of the year, KEENfest, which will be held on October 29, 2009.

© Tony Powell - Bo Derek and Tony Powell March 2008

Growing up I had the biggest crush on Bo Derek in the movie “10.” Dudley Moore had nothing on me, in my mind. One of the best parts of being a photographer at Washington Life Magazine is not knowing who, what, or where, I will be asked to photograph.

I received a call, in March of this year, to shoot a possible cover for the magazine that involved Charlie Rose and Bo Derek. Couldn’t believe it! The shoot took place on the second floor of the Embassy Residence of Kuwait during the cocktail hour before the Kuwait-America Foundation 2008 Gala Dinner. President and Mrs. Bush, Condoleeza Rice, Marvin Hamlisch, as well DC Mayor Adrian Fenty, were in attendance. While photos from the shoot didn’t make the cover, it did give me an idea of where this road could take me. Bo (who looks great by the way) was nice enough to take a few pictures with me after we finished the photo shoot. A real PRO!
